No Landline ?

What if you wish to use your LifeLink but you don't have a landline?  Or you wish to use your system with a phone service that we know isn't compatible (such as Time Warner or Cablevision).  Some potential customers have opted to discontinue all landline service (traditional plain old telephone service or digital voice over IP) in favor of the use of thei cell phone.  While this presents some challenges to the use of LifeLink, there are a few options available which you may wish to consider.  Please note that it is our opinion that the pure use of a cell phone is far inferior to the use of a landline for a variety of reasons -- particularly since the price of landline services (as noted below) are decreasing dramatically.  Also, there are a variety of restrictions depending on the solution as are noted below.  It is important to understand that these options must be installed by someone who is technical enough to understand how they work since they involve Internet Voice Over IP and/or bluetooth cellular access.

OPTION 1A and 1B:  MagicJack and MagicJack Plus

The people at MagicJack just get more and more innovative every year with their FOB-based phone services.  These two near-free phone services work over your regular broadband Internet connection.  First year (that's YEAR, not MONTH) cost is $39.99 for the regular MagicJack and $59.99 for the MagicJack Plus for unlimited local and long distance.  Subsequent years' cost is $19.99 and $29.99 respectively.  Again, these are annual cost, not monthly.  The regular MagicJack can be purchased at Best Buy stores.  The MagicJack plus must be purchased from magicjack.com, though these are expected to be available soon at Best Buy.  The regular MagicJack requires a computer that is always on, but the MagicJack Plus does not need a computer to work.  You simply connect it into your home router with the provided Ethernet cable.

This option has the added benefit of allowing you to use a regular telephone (or set of telephones such as a DECT cordless phone system) to make calls, again, through the MagicJack.  To accomplish this, simply use a splitter with your MagicJack.

See www.magicjack.com or visit your local Best Buy store for more information.

Setup

Simply plug your MagicJack in to your computer, or your MagicJack Plus in to your home router.  You will need to go through a one-time registration process through MagicJack.com.  You will get to choose your own phone number, or if you'd like, you can port your home phone number over to your MagicJack.  Once registered, you are ready to go.  Your LifeLink system simply connects in to the RJ11 jack that is on the end of the MagicJack.  If you will be using a cordless phone system with it, you can use a splitter and your LifeLink, as well as your cordless phone, will be able to share the MagicJack service.

OPTION 2:  Verizon Home Phone Connect

Cellular providers are coming out with cellular-based services which allow your regular home phones to connect into the service's "black box" and having the black box utilize cellular technology as the actual phone service -- transparent to the customer.  The Verizon Home Phone Connect service has been tested with LifeLink and has been found to work.  This service comes with unlimited local and long distance calling.

Setup

You must activate your service with Verizon before installing, as monthly fees are involved - about $20 per month for unlimited local and long distance.  You install the "black box" anywhere in your home that has a good cellular signal.  Once installed, you are ready to connect your LifeLink and, optionally, your home phone system to the box.  If more than the LifeLink will be used, you will need to use the provided splitter.  Call are made normally, whether they are through the LifeLink or through your home phone.  You can even port your home phone number over to the Verizon Home Phone Connect service.

OPTION 3: Cell Phone Gateway

The product "Xlink" is a bluetooth-enabled device which, when paired with your bluetooth-capable cell phone, allows LifeLink to make outbound emergency calls using your cell phone service.  The Xlink provides a standard RJ11 telephone jack for use with LifeLink.  So, phone calls from this location go from the LifeLink, to the Xlink, to and through the cell phone.  The Xlink device can be purchased online for under $100.

This option has the added benefit of allowing you to use a regular telephone (or set of telephones such as a DECT cordless phone system) to make calls through your cell phone in addition to allowing LifeLink to call out. With this setup, all calls made inbound to your cell phone will ring your cordless phone set and all call made outbound are made through your cellphone.  To accomplish this setup - with the LifeLink and the cordless phone system - simply use a splitter with your Xlink and connect LifeLink into one side and your phone into the other side.

See www.myxlink.com for more information.

Setup

If you will only be connecting your LifeLink system, once the Xlink is paired to your cell phone, you simply connect the LifeLink into the RJ11 jack on the Xlink.  Then, simply run a test.  If you will be using a phone (or cordless phone system) with your Xlink, you would connect a splitter into the Xlink, then connect LifeLink into one side of the splitter, and the master phone into the other side of the splitter.
